At least three men were on Tuesday sentenced to various jail terms by the Mobile Court which started work in Unity State’s Mayom County on 15 March when the first team of investigators arrived in the county.

Last month, the Mobile Court investigated 42 criminal cases and on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man who defiled a 16-year-old girl to 10 years in jail, a 19-year-old man who defiled a 17-year-old girl to 5 years in prison, and the third man was sentenced to 7 years behind bars for murder.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Samuel Muthok, the Justice Advisor to the Unity State government, confirmed the sentences and said the work of the Mobile Court was progressing well.

“The three men who were sentenced to jail today had different cases, two cases are rape and one case is murder. The mobile court found the three men guilty after they committed crimes against innocent civilians,” he said. “A 26-year-old man raped an underage girl, 16, and was sentenced to jail for ten years, another man, under 19 years, who raped an underage, 17-year-old girl, and was given 5 years in prison and the person who killed someone some months ago was sentenced to jail for seven years.”

Muthok added: “The convicts will serve their sentences at Mayom County Prison according to the judge.”

He added that the Mobile Court is working hard to clear the backlog of 28 cases and 6 new cases before the end of the week.

“11 suspects on remand escaped last week and the police director in Mayom and the rest of the security personnel are still looking for them to be brought to justice,” Muthok stated.
