The Mobile Court, currently hearing a backlog of cases from across Unity State, has dropped murder charges against and freed the Director of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Koch County.
Madeng Latjor Madeng, the Unity State Public Prosecutor and Acting Director of Legal Administration, confirmed the release of Ruot Riak, who has been in custody for close to four months on allegations of ordering the killing of someone in Koch County through a telephone call in January. He said an investigation found that Riak did not make the alleged phone calls.
“The Mobile Court has dismissed the case of RRC Director Ruot Riak, who was arrested on allegations of communicating with the criminals who murdered someone in Koch County,” Latjoe explained. “During the court hearing, we engaged the two telecommunication companies, MTN and Zain, and we checked Riak’s past communications, but we found that the RRC director is innocent because he did not communicate with anyone to kill an innocent civilian at the time.”
Meanwhile, Riak confirmed his release from detention after four months since 15 January.
“My detention was ordered by Koch County Commissioner David Gatmai Wal because he is the one who said that I informed the criminals who murdered my brother’s son, known as Gatbel Mayang,” he stated. “I do not know the reason why the commissioner is against me, and yet we are in the same government.”
“I spent four months in police detention, but the good thing is that the Mobile Court dismissed the case,” Riak added.
