Consumers in Yei town have expressed mixed feelings on food prices in the major markets of the town. Some buyers say prices for local food commodities have slightly dropped compared to the last three months.

Rose Kiden, a buyer inside Dar-Salam market told Radio Tamazuj that a bar of soap is now at 50 SSP compared to 120 SSP, and a packet of salt is now at 25 SSP compared to 40 SSP in the past. She calls on the government to improve security to reduce the suffering of the people.

“The market is slightly improving and we expect more reduction, we are tired – we need peace so that we can return back to our peaceful life so that we can be happy,” she added.

Meanwhile, Hawa Adams another buyer at Jigomoni Market told Radio Tamazuj that market prices still remain high in other parts of the town. She says a bag of maize flour is ranging from 2,000-2,500 SSP while a bucket of maize is 250-300 SSP.

Hawa says most families are still surviving on fresh cassava and sweet potatoes. “Things are still very expensive and what is currently helping the people of Yei is fresh cassava or sweet potatoes.”

Traders attributed the price fluctuations to insecurity on major roads and high forex rates.
