A Sudanese trader was killed in South Sudan’s border region of Northern Bahr al Ghazal State last week. Authorities have arrested several suspects in connection with the slaying.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj from the hometown of the deceased, a relative confirmed that the merchant Bashir al Awad was killed by unknown assailants in the Majok area while on the road back to Meiram in West Kordofan.
Professor Abu Obeida Mohamed Hamdan, a relative of the slain, said that the merchant along with three others had transported goods to South Sudan and were returning to Sudan when they were fired upon by unidentified gunmen, causing the instant death of Awad.
According to Hamdan, the body of the deceased was brought to Babanusa and buried on Saturday.
He noted that the authorities in Northern Bahr al Ghazal have detained five suspects. Another source in the state capital independently confirmed the arrest of the suspects, without specifying the number of those detained.
Hamdan pointed out also that the Dinka and Misseriya peace committee based in Majok and Meiram have agreed to follow up on the incident.
