Misseriya leader Hamad Al Dodu has condemned last Friday’s attack in the disputed area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan which killed a United Nations peacekeeper and a child.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Dodu said the attack could affect peaceful coexistence between the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka peoples who both claim Abyei. He said they will continue to work for social peace in the area.
“We condemn the incident, it is nonsense,” he said. “However, we have open communication, we want to have peaceful coexistence between the tribes, of course the incident has disrupted our endeavours.”
For his part, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon called on the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to help the UN security force in Abyei area bring to justice the armed group which committed the attack.
Thus far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which appeared to target the home of the Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief.
