Misseriya face shortage of veterinary medicines

A number of cattle herders in western South Kordofan State, the homeland of the Misseriya tribe, complained of a severe shortage in veterinary medicines, especially an anti-poisoning serum for cattle. A number of herders from Meiram and Al Fula said that thousands of cattle are facing the danger of death due to the spread of the poisoning and the shortage of the serum.

The demand for the serum increased with the appearance of the disease after the return of herders from south of the Bahr Al Arab river in August. Sources stated that the shortage has led to a great increase in infection among cows.

Traders in the region and veterinary pharmacists said that the serum is lacking in the towns Fula and Meiram where it should be sold. They attributed the shortage to a problem of the supply from Khartoum, since the amount delivered was less than that demanded due the increase in the prices of medicines.

The traders also pointed to the difficulty in reaching the herders in the regions, the lack of proper roads and the continuous rains. Herders have called on the authorities to intervene to save their cattle from the spreading diseases.
