Aweil State Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement has called for formation of a women’s chiefs council to address some cases within communities in the state.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, the Aweil State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Ajak Michael Akook said establishing such a body of women body would help to address some abuses that happen in communities such as divorce and gender imbalance.
This council of women would help in judging some matters within communities of Dinka and Luo, she said. “It is important to have women chiefs for two good reasons,” she said, explaining that the first reason was to protect womens’ rights in courts.
“If there is a woman as a chief they will understand the point of view of the woman who has come with the case.” Another reason was to help in settling domestic abuse cases, she said.
