Ministry: High maternal mortality rate among mothers in Sudan

Sudan’s National Ministry of Health has confirmed that there is high maternal mortality rate among mothers in Sudan, with the highest mortality rate in one of the country's conflict-affected states.

Doctor Sarah al-Tigani, the director of maternal health at the national ministry of health, said in statement to press on Tuesday that many women died when giving birth to their children due to poor medical care in public hospitals in Sudan and lack medical equipment and personnel.

She added that Blue Nile state has the highest rate of maternal mortality.

Separately, bloggers and social media activists have criticized the government for building a hospital in Djibouti with USD 20 million as a grant to the African country in the Horn of Africa, saying the hospital should have been built in Sudan.

Sudan’s first Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh has participated in the official opening of the hospital in Djibouti capital on Thursday with many artists and local leaders.

Many hospitals in Sudan are facing challenges due to poor medical services amid the migration of medical doctors to other countries due to limited payment and poor work environment.
