Primary and secondary schools are expected to open soon in South Sudan’s Jonglei state, according to the state education ministry.
Jonglei State Minister of Education Tut Kuony Nyang told Radio Tamazuj Sunday that the necessary arrangements for the start of the academic year in the state are in place.
He said the conflict in Jonglei state caused major damage to school facilities, but schools in five counties will open as soon as the secondary school examinations conclude.
Tut said the schools were closed due to insecurity in the state. He said they have already started renovation of schools destroyed by the war.
The minister appealed to families to send their children to school so that their educations are not affected by political turmoil.
Secondary school students from Jonglei displaced by the violence sat for their exams in the capital Juba and in various gathering points for IDPs.
