Minister briefs NBG assembly on hunt for killer

Northern Bahr al-Ghazal State Assembly members summoned the state’s top security official to give an update on the hunt for a suspected killer and rapist and question him on the failure to resolve the problems.

A known suspect has been implicated in the killings of some 10 people since last year and in the kidnapping of three women and a child in Aweil Centre County.

MPs say that the crime spree has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of citizens from some major villages in Aweil Centre County since last year.

Salva Chol Ayat, the deputy governor and minister of law enforcement, told MPs that he held several meetings with the head of organized forces to discuss a solution to the problem.

"We have sent enough forces to search for the killer who so far killed ten people, raped ladies and displaced hundreds away from their areas where they were cultivating much sorghum and the groundnuts. I believe that they are capable, they will search until they find him, and they will bring him whether alive or dead," said Chol.

Chol added that lack of transportation and poor communications in the search areas are major factors constraining the hunt for the killer.

He further blamed some communities for cooperating with the killer. ''Communities cooperate with the killer in many ways. He stayed with the people and they used to say that his name is not to be mentioned and when you mention his name, you become the victim,” he said.

"I want to tell the MPs representing those villages where people are displaced that you go and talk to your people to help the government in searching for the killer."

Assembly members have given the minister a one month period to bring the killer to justice.
