Minni Arko Minawi, governor of the Darfur region, has issued an order appointing a three-member committee to oversee the concerns of Darfur residents held in prisons in Northern and River Nile states.

Lieutenant Colonel Maash Al-Fadil Adam Kaya, a member of the committee, told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that the team has initiated its activities upon arriving in River Nile State.

“The committee convened in Al-Damer with Governor Ahmed Al-Badawi and members of the state security committee to verify reports of the detention of Darfuris in Northern and River Nile states based on racial grounds,” said Al-Fadil.

Al-Fadil reached his decision following consultations with various security entities, including the police, military, and justice agencies, confirming that the circulating rumours were entirely false.

The committee’s responsibilities can be summarized as conducting on-site visits to Northern and River Nile states, engaging with governmental, judicial, and police authorities, as well as security agencies.

Their primary objective is to facilitate the release of Darfur residents from prisons and detention. Additionally, the committee will meet with civil administrations and community committees to address issues in accordance with local customs and traditions.

The committee is composed of Yahya Hassan El-Nil Abdel-Baqi, Haroun Yacoub Nahar, and Adam Kaya.

Conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on April 15, 2023. While fighting has been chiefly concentrated in the country’s capital, Khartoum, the conflict has impacted other regions. In Darfur, mass killings and displacement have led to reports of ethnic cleansing.

Over 12,000 people have been killed, with about 5.9 million displaced within the country, making it the largest internal displacement crisis globally. More than 7.2 million people have fled their homes, taking refuge inside and outside the country.
