Merowe meeting fails to reconcile feuding East Darfur tribes

A peace conference between the feuding Arab tribes Rizeigat and Ma’alia in Merowe town in Sudan’s Northern State has failed to reach an agreement last week, a tribal leader said.

A peace conference between the feuding Arab tribes Rizeigat and Ma’alia in Merowe town in Sudan’s Northern State has failed to reach an agreement last week, a tribal leader said.

Yusuf Ali Hamid, Ma’alia tribal leader in East Darfur state, told Radio Tamazuj that they expected the failure of the peace conference before it was concluded.

He further said a document presented by the magistrate committee was disappointing, singling out the issues of land ownership in the area.

The tribal leader blamed the government for the failed meeting, saying the failure of the peace conference would mean continuation of insecurity in East Darfur.

He called upon local authorities to bring an end to the bloodshed in the State.

Last week, the Rizeigat tribal leader Mohamed Issa Aliu told Radio Tamazuj that the two sides failed to reach any agreement after two issues of land ownership and leadership became obstacles at the meeting.
