Media group calls on international community to assist investigation into S Sudan reporter killing

An international media organization has demanded a full investigation into the death of South Sudanese reporter Peter Julius Moi, who was gunned down Wednesday in Juba.

The Foreign Correspondents Association of East Africa (FCAEA) said it is “both shocked and saddened to hear news journalist Peter Julius Moi was shot dead last night in Juba,” noting that Peter was a “well-liked and respected journalist in Juba’s increasingly difficult media environment.”

“The FCAEA calls for the relevant South Sudanese authorities to fully investigate the death and hopes any international actors can provide the necessary support to the inquiry,” the media group said.

“The timing of the death is disturbing, considering recent comments by South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir regarding press freedom and a number of media outlets being closed down,” the FCAEA added. Peter’s death came just days after President Salva Kiir threatened to kill journalists.

“South Sudan fought decades of civil war for freedom from its oppressive northern neighbour, freedoms increasingly diminished as the world’s newest country fighting a war with itself for nearly two years,” the group said.
