Juba City Mayor Johnson Swaka has issued a ban on the rearing and movement of livestock within the city’s jurisdiction, citing concerns over public order and urban management.
The directive, announced on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Wednesday, mandates that all residents and local authorities comply with the new regulations.
“No person is permitted to keep cattle, sheep, or goats in residential areas within Juba City Council’s territory,” the order stated. “The Chief Executive Officer of Juba City Council, Block directors, and the general public are required to ensure the implementation of this order, which takes immediate effect.”
Livestock movement is a common sight in Juba, driven by pastoralists searching for pasture and water.
However, this practice has frequently led to tensions with local communities and disrupted traffic, underscoring the need for stricter urban policies.
