Mayom customary court jails two cattle thieves for 18 months

Two men were on Thursday sentenced to jail for 18 months by a customary court in Mayom County of Unity State.

The sentence followed two weeks of crackdown by the Mayom authorities on the criminals suspected of involvement in the theft of 11 head of cattle from Warrap State.

Security personnel were deployed to the border areas of Unity and Warrap states after the authorities received information from local communities about the two suspected cattle thieves.

County Paramount Chief William Nhial Gatluak said the two were arrested as they returned to Mayom from Warrap State with 11 cows, which were recovered by the security personnel.

Gatluak, also the chairman of customary court, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj on Friday the sentencing of the livestock thieves, who were also fined 300,000 South Sudanese Pounds.

He lamented that cases of livestock theft had remained on the rise across Unity and Warrap states since 2022.
