Two police officers have been arrested by local authorities in Rubkuai Payam, located in Unity State’s Mayendit County. Their arrest is linked to an attack in the area that occurred on Saturday.
According to officials, the detained suspects are accused of shooting and injuring civilians, including a community elder. Notably, they have a history of violence related to revenge, with a previous incident in Leer County where a 16-year-old girl was killed in Leer town last year.
Radio Tamazuj interviewed Unity State Police Spokesperson John Malieth on Monday, who confirmed that the suspects were arrested on Saturday following their firing on civilians.
Malieth explained, “The authorities in Mayendit County have taken action against the two police men who committed a crime against civilians in Rubkuai Payam. An investigation is underway to uncover the motive behind the suspects’ attack on civilians.”
Malieth revealed that one individual, who was shot and injured by the two police officers, had been recently hired and was working for the local authorities in Rubkuai. The injured civilian is currently receiving medical care at the secondary health facility in Bentiu IDPs camp.
He also noted, “Prior to the recruitment of these two police officers by local authorities, there had been documented disputes between two youth groups.”
Malieth explained that the police commissioner has issued orders for the arrest of the two individuals responsible for these offenses against the community in Rubkuai.
He further clarified, “Upon the conclusion of our investigations, the suspects will be transferred to the Mayendit headquarters and official criminal charges will be filed against them in accordance with the law.”
