Mass arrests in Awerial County after inter-clan clashes

Authorities have arrested about 25 youths suspected of involvement in inter-clan clashes in Awerial County in Lakes States, including youths from two cattle camps.

Among them are two people said to have initiated the fighting between two cattle camps of the Aliab community of Awerial County. In last fighting, three people were reported to have been killed while 8 people were wounded from both sides.

Commissioner Deng Tong Kenjok said investigations will be completed within a week and the cases will be forwarded to a special court for trial in Rumbek.

“Of course all of them should face court because the fight was not one against one but all were suspected to have participated in the fighting and all must face justice,” he said.

He said the situation in Awerial County is calm and people are going on with their normal business.

He added also reported that between five and ten thousand cattle are crossing back to Jonglei State. They had come to Lakes state after clashes in greater Bor area earlier this year.
