Martin Elia: No key ministries to rebels

A top South Sudanese government official said President Kiir will never give key ministries to Riek Machar’s SPLM/A-In Opposition or SPLM-G10 Former Detainees during the proposed transitional government of national unity.

Cabinet affairs minister Martin Elia Lomoro told the Stance newspaper on Monday that President Salva Kiir will not allow ministries of foreign affairs, interior, or defense to be assumed by the opposition.

“The agreement says the president is the chief foreign relations officer – that means he is the top diplomat,” Lomoro was quoted as saying.

“So how can he give the foreign affairs to someone else? The agreement says the president is the commander in chief of the SPLA and the head of other organized forces. How can he give the ministry of defence to the opposition forces?” he asked.

According to peace deal signed in August, each party will select ministerial portfolios on a rotational basis.

Lomoro reiterated his government’s commitment to the peace deal brokered by the East African regional bloc IGAD and international community
