At least 18 agricultural extension workers in South Sudan’s Maridi State are to set to be trained, an official said.

The state agriculture minister, Aguno Sette Enosa told a meeting of partners on Monday that they lack skilled staff in the agricultural sector in the state.

He requested non-governmental organizations working in partnership with the agriculture ministry to train extension workers in the state.

“We need to train more skilled staff. We want to see the extension of agricultural activities reach up to the payams and bomas. That is why we have the initiative to do this thing,” said Enosa.

The minister said a plan for the training of the 18 extension workers has been tabled before the state council of ministers for approval.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Africano Mande urged partners implementing agriculture activities in the state to improve the sector.

“We urge you to push for intervention in the agriculture sector, which will benefit our people in the long run,” he said.

Emmanuel Kemere, a food security officer with World Relief, said extension workers training will reduces dependency on aid agencies.
