Municipal authorities in Maridi town in South Sudan’s Maridi State have banned slaughtering of cows along streams.
The new directive followed a one-day meeting held between butchers and municipal officials Monday on how they can collaborate to improve on the hygiene of meat business in the area.
“We have reopened the slaughterhouse located at Dabaya residential area, Sika-Rumbek side. All the cows should be slaughtered there to avoid contamination of meat,” said Kinako Gasper Elia, the Mayor of Maridi Town.
He urged all butchers to follow all the legal procedures put in place.
“No one should sell dead animals and all animals should be examined before slaughtering,” said Kinako.
“Businesses are regulated by law. It has come to our notice that some people are trading in dead animals which is not good. Our public health officer is working closely with the butchers to see that all animals are examined before being slaughtered,” he added.
Kinako said those who slaughter unexamined animals will face the law.
Meanwhile, Jacob Nyial, the head of butchers in the state, thanked authorities for allowing them to operate, but said the butchers needed to be informed early enough if any new changes are put in place.
