The Member of Parliament representing Maridi County, Justin Joseph Marona, has called for South Sudan to better regulate the use of flammable materials and to educate people about the dangers involved in handling such materials. His initiative comes after a tragic accident in Maridi County in which approximately 200 people died in a tanker fire.
“I urge the government to conduct a national program to enlighten and educate the people of South Sudan to avoid collecting and using petrol unnecessarily. I also urge the Ministry of Interior to come immediately with laws regulating the use of flammable material in order to save lives of our people and country, taking the Maridi incident as a lesson,” said the MP, as quoted by Radio Miraya.
Marona has presented an urgent motion calling for an investigation and collective support for the survivors of the incident. The parliament has also formed a five member committee to investigate the recent fuel tanker explosion.
