Maridi commissioner’s house attacked after herders ordered out

Gunmen in military uniform have reportedly attacked the Maridi County Commissioner’s house on Tuesday just after a government delegation including Western Equatoria governor and top national officials left the area.

Governor Joseph Bakosoro and deputy foreign affairs minister Peter Bashir had been in Maridi to order out cattle keepers from Bahr al Ghazal region from the area following deadly clashes with locals.

MP Ketora Yona told Radio Tamazuj that the commissioner’s house was attacked by gunmen in military uniforms.

The MP said the commissioner fled to the church in the area. The lawmaker warned that the current situation could lead to chaos and violence in all areas that witness relative stability in South Sudan if the problem is not resolved as soon as possible.

Yona pointed out that it is very difficult to differentiate between citizens and soldiers in Maridi County.

"The people who wear civilian clothes during the day are the ones who put on  military uniforms at night to cause insecurity," Yona explained.
