Maridi citizens returning to town not villages

Local authorities in Maridi County in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state said citizens are returning to the town but not to villages because houses were burned down.

Maridi County’s Executive Director John Ezikia Bol told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that calm has returned to the area.

This follows violence between local agriculturalists and herders associated with SPLA units from Greater Bahr al Ghazal region and Jonglei state. Many civilians were reported killed or wounded.

Ezikia Bol said local authorities are now working to help the returnees. He said deputy minister of foreign affairs Bashir Gbandi recently donated 75,000 SSP for the conflict-affected people in the area.

He said humanitarian organizations carried out a needs-assessment survey in preparation for providing relief to the people in the area.
