The police in Jur River County in Western Bahr el Ghazal State said they are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a famous blacksmith in Mapel Payam.
On Tuesday, a blacksmith identified as Akol Ubany, 47, was found dead in a 20-meter-deep well with his neck broken.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Wednesday, Michael Mayen Atem, a police sergeant at Mapel police post, said the deceased had been drinking most of the previous day and might have fallen in the well but that the police are investigating the matter.
“This person was drunk and was on his way home at night when people were indoors. He seems to have fallen into a well by the side of the road,” he said. “This well was fenced sometime back by the deceased blacksmith himself. It is a deep well of about 20 meters and he fell into it and his body was recovered and removed the following day (Tuesday).”
According to Atem, it is clear that the late Ubany was drunk but he said that the police will investigate the death.
“It is clear that the deceased fell into the well because he was drunk but investigations are ongoing today because yesterday people were burying him,” he added.
Last year, a 7-year-old girl died in Kangu Payam in Jur River County after falling into a well while fetching water.
