Fighting between the Sudanese government and SPLM-N in parts of South Kordofan and Blue Nile has intensified in April-May 2014, causing new displacement of more than 100,000 people.

Figures compiled by the UN humanitarian coordination office in Sudan (OCHA) from aid agencies, government and rebel sources put the number of newly displaced at close to 116,000.

In addition, since January 2014 over 17,000 people from South Sudan sought shelter in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

However, some northern parts of South Kordofan, particularly Abu Kershola which was affected by violence last year, have remained stable enough to allow the return of an estimated 30,000 people from North Kordofan.

In a map dated 12 May, OCHA indicates some approximate population movements and estimates of the size of displaced populations.
