About 126 aid organizations including UN agencies, international and national NGOs and the Red Cross have responded to humanitarian needs in South Sudan since December.

About 126 aid organizations including UN agencies, international and national NGOs and the Red Cross have responded to humanitarian needs in South Sudan since December.

Only about half of the aid agencies working in the country have any presence at all in the three worst-affected states, Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity, according to a map produced by the UN coordination office (OCHA).

Within those states, most aid efforts are concentrated at the state capitals, Bor, Malakal and Bentiu (Rubkona County), as well as Maban County where a large aid operation for Sudanese refugees was already present before the South Sudan crisis.

Significant numbers of aid organizations are also working in two other counties bordering on these most affected states: Awerial in Lakes, bordering Jonglei just across the Nile, and Twic in Warrap, bordering Unity.

The states with the fewest humanitarian organizations are Western Bahr al Ghazal and Western Equatoria, neither of which have seen significant violence, as well as Unity state, which is the most affected state in terms of displacement.

The map also indicates by coloration the severity of the humanitarian situation on a county by county basis.
