The United Nations says that 1.7 million have fled their homes since conflict broke out in South Sudan in December 2013.
Though many have crossed into neighbouring countries, most are still within South Sudan – many in remote rural areas. Most are in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states.
“Displacement patterns are fluid, driven among other things by violence, access to emergency assistance and floods,” reads an infographic published by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
OCHA says that in some areas people displace early early during the conflict have since returned to their homes having in many cases lost all their belongings. The number of such people is about 186,000.
