The body of a 27-year-old deaf man identified as Atari Orika was found floating on Kineti River of Torit Town, Eastern Equatoria State, on Wednesday.

Several announcements had been made on State Radio 97.5FM about a man drowning while crossing the Khor Moloto Bridge.

The Civil Defense has this year registered six cases of drowning in the Kineti River, a figure higher than for the same period last year.

The Deputy Director for Safety and Disaster Management for Eastern Equatoria State Civil Defense Force, Lt Kennedy Khamis, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the body was recovered at around 10am.

He said the body was taken to the ancestral home at Abalwa Village for burial.

“The deceased was from a traditional dance for the last funeral rite of a boy who was stabbed dead by the father,” he explained.

Khamis urged the local residents to immediately report drowning-related cases to the concerned authorities for support.

“I am urging citizens not to fear reporting incidences such as drowning to police,” he said.

Family representative Grato Okech Filajio confirmed receipt of the body of their kin and expressed condolences to the entire family

The Eastern Equatoria State Chairperson of the Union of Persons with Disability, William British, extended his message of condolences and called on the government to erect and improve bridges along the Kineti River.
