Man, wife arrested for allegedly killing a mentally disturbed man in Aweil West

Local authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State’s Aweil West County have arrested a man and his wife for allegedly killing a mentally disturbed man in Gomjuer West Payam on Monday night.

38-year-old Chan Athiang, believed to be mentally disturbed, was killed after he allegedly attacked a family in the Chelkou area of Gomjuer West Payam, Aweil West County.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Aweil West County police inspector Major Deng Mathon Akot confirmed the incident and said the police are currently investigating Bol Bol and his wife identified only as Atong.

“This was a mentally-ill patient who visits people’s homes and asks questions. He then gets violent if not answered the way he expects. He entered their house and started beating the children. So, the owner of the house fought him back,” he explained.

The police say the mentally disturbed man has been terrorizing the community.

The Executive Director for Aweil West County, John Garang Aguot, has also confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.
