A 32-year-old man identified as Kuol Thop died at Mankien Hospital on Wednesday evening after being involved in a motorcycle accident between Ruathnyebol and Mankien and Unity State’s Mayom County earlier in the day.
According to the traffic police, Thop was a passenger on a motorbike. The rider was severely injured and flown to Juba Teaching Hospital for further management.
The Unity State traffic police director, Domai Dak Kai, told Radio Tamazuj Thursday that the accident which happened on Wednesday afternoon was caused by speeding.
“There was a motorcycle that was moving at high speed and got involved in an accident on Wednesday at 3 p.m.,” he said. “The passenger on the motorcycle was injured and later died at Mankien Hospital and the rider is receiving treatment at Juba Teaching Hospital.”
The traffic police officer said the father of the rider of the motorbike has been detained by the police instead of his son and will be released after his son returns from treatment.
“After the accident, the first thing we did was to arrest the father of the rider and he is being detained at Mayom Police Station until investigations start when his son recovers from his injuries,” he said.
Dak urged the family of the deceased rider to remain calm as investigations continue and cautioned drivers against speeding. He also warned that motorcycles are only allowed to carry one passenger.
