A woman was stabbed to death in her home on Thursday in Gogrial West County of Warrap State, and police believe her husband was the murderer.
Adhar Angok, a local police officer, told Radio Tamazuj that the man identified as Mayen stabbed his wife Abuk Madut to death at Awan Payam.
“A Man called Mayen is from Tonj, and he migrated there and stayed for some years in Panliet Awan and on Thursday, he killed his wife called Abuk Madut,” Angok said.
Angok stated that the man also attempted to take his own life but was rescued by neighbours.
“He hurt his stomach with a knife until the intestines came out, but he didn’t die and was taken to Kuajok hospital for treatment,” he said.
Angok said the reason for the murder is not known. He urged residents to report to police any cases of domestic violence before they are out of hand.
Meanwhile, Brigadier Akuechbeny Machol, director of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), confirmed the incident.
“The man has killed his wife, burned goats in the hut and attempted to kill himself but was not allowed to do so. He is now hospitalized in Kuajok, and the police are investigating the case with neighbours,” he said.
According to Article 206 of the South Sudan Penal Code, whoever causes the death of another person commits the offence of murder and, upon conviction, be sentenced to death or imprisonment for life, and may also be liable to a fine; provided that if the nearest relatives of the deceased opt for customary blood compensation.
