A High Court in Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei state on Monday sentenced a man to death by hanging.
Justice Yel Aleu, the presiding judge told Radio Tamazuj Thursday that Akuei Diar was sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of murder.
He further said the offence committed by Diar was punishable under Section 206 of Penal Code. “Akuei Diar was found guilty for killing Madit Majok,” he said.
Yel, who is also the president of High Court in Jonglei State, said Diar had 14 days to appeal.
Last month, Amnesty International accused South Sudan’s government of stepping up use of the death penalty with seven executions last year.
But President Salva Kiir’s spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny denied Amnesty’s report, saying no one had been executed and a moratorium had been placed on the practice in South Sudan.
