Man sentenced to 10 years in jail for raping teenager in Mundri West

A Mobile Court in Mundri West County of Western Equatoria State has found a 26-year-old man guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl and sentenced him to 10 years in jail.

A Mobile Court in Mundri West County of Western Equatoria State has found a 26-year-old man guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. 

The man was fined SSP 500,000 for the crime committed on 23rd March 2022. 

Reading the ruling on Friday in Mundri, the presiding Judge Andrew Joshua Lado said the victim, a 14-year-old girl narrated to the court her ordeal with the convict, identified as Samuel Abu John. According to the court, the girl said the man forcefully raped her twice last month. 

“The accused person has violated the victim’s right under Article 17 of the 2011 constitution, and in conclusion, the prosecutor proved without reasonable doubt that the accused person had sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old underage girl without her consent,” Judge Joshua explained. “So I found that the accused was guilty under Penal Code Act 247.”

He continued, “I sentence you in the following, one imprisonment for ten years effectively from the date of arrest on the 29th March 2022 according to provision Section 247 of the 2008 Penal Code Act. Two, the convict must pay an amount of 500,000 South Sudanese Pounds to the victim.”
