A man identified as Ojum Sestilio on Friday beat his wife to death and committed suicide by hanging in Omono Village in Torit County of South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State.
Simon Ikarang, the Chief of Enyief, Ifwotu Payam, told Radio Tamazuj that the two couples died after a family misunderstanding resulting from overconsumption of alcohol.
According to the traditional chief, the incident happened on Friday at around 6 pm.
“He killed the wife using a stick and then hanged himself with a rope. His madness used to start when he is drunk, and it is this alcohol that spoiled his mind,” Chief Simon narrated.
Jacob Atari Albano, the commissioner of Torit County, confirmed the incident saying the government has laid a plan to regulate the consumption of alcohol at the grassroots level.
“If you see those sides of Imurok Payam and Ifwotu Payam, these people are now consuming alcohol a lot, they cannot even know the effect of alcohol, and they don’t even know the disadvantages of having alcohol. So I am so dismayed by such kind of actions happening in those areas and perhaps the governor last time issued the order of banning all the types of alcohol, we as the county we are going to implement the local order,” he said.
Peter Lokeng Lotone, Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency said police forces have been sent to investigate the incident.
