Man kills brother over goat in Gogrial West

The local authorities in Warrap State’s Gogrial West County on Sunday said a man murdered his elder brother in Gogrial Town for selling a family goat.

Nhomuot Deng Nhomuot, a head chief in Gogrial West County, said the demands of the festive season amidst the economic meltdown, put a lot of pressure on many families leading to quarrels.

“An elder called Akok was killed by his younger brother called Akeen in Gogrial town. Akeen is badly behaved and steals and sells things like sorghum, goats, and cows from home. His elder brother was the one responsible at home,” he explained. “On Thursday, Akeen stole a family goat and sold it to a broker at a livestock auction. Akok identified the goat at the auction and when he asked, the broker said he bought it from somebody called Akeen. Akok then rushed to the police and searched for his younger brother who they found playing dominoes. When police called him, he came angrily and boxed his brother in the chest and he died.”

Chief Deng said the police immediately detained Akeen and the family will decide whether to proceed with a murder case in court or resolve the matter using customary law.

He advised communities to seek redress through courts rather than resorting to violence.

Meanwhile, Gogrial West County Commissioner Victor Wek Koordit confirmed the incident and said a soldier also hanged himself on the same day in Akon.

“The man killed his brother, who is his elder brother from the same mother because the little brother stole the goat, and when late Akok wanted to return the goat home, he was killed by the younger brother who boxed him and he unfortunately died at Gogrial Primary Health Care Center,” he said.

According to Wek, a soldier hanged himself in Akon for unknown reasons.

“He killed himself near a neighbor’s house and he was even an old man who did not even need Christmas clothes and other needs,” he stated.

The commissioner urged residents to report cases that can cause problems and he assured that the security situation is stable and that people are enjoying the festive season.
