Police in Eastern Equatoria State have arrested a man accused of killing his brother-in-law in Iloli village of Hiyala payam following a disagreement over dowry payment on Saturday.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the state police spokesperson, Major Justin Kleopus Takuru said Osman Assai shot his brother-in-law Daniel Okelle.
“According to investigations, Daniel married the sister of Osman Assai in the same village, but had some misunderstandings over unpaid dowry. When Osman questioned why Okelle had ignored several calls to resolve the matter, the two men held each other and their hands accidentally touched the trigger and they were both injured in the process,” he explained.
Takuru said Daniel Okelle was rushed to Torit Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The police officer further said Mr. Osman, currently in custody, awaits trial after treatment.
Takuru blamed the incident on the proliferation of firearms in the hands of civilians in the state. “The issue of guns has become a big problem in our communities,” he said.
