Local authorities in Mayom County of Unity State have confirmed the murder of a young man by his brother-in-law in a tragic incident involving a longstanding dowry dispute.
The suspect remains at large, with the state government and county authorities in active pursuit following reports of a fatal shooting incident. The victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
The suspect, who had a history of demanding dowry from the man who married his sister, carried out the shocking shooting on Tuesday night. The deceased had previously filed a case against his assailant in September, in response to relentless demands for dowry as compensation for marrying the suspect’s sister.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Mayom County Commissioner John Bol Mayak said: “The authorities in Mayom County have taken action to locate the armed man who killed the husband of his sister. We are actively seeking his arrest because he killed his brother-in-law over a dowry dispute.”
Commissioner Mayak also revealed that the deceased, who had not yet been fully identified, passed away while receiving medical attention at the Mayom health facility at 8:00 AM on Wednesday.
Highlighting the bewildering nature of the incident, Mayak expressed, “There were no known disputes or conflicts between them before, except for the ongoing dispute over dowry. This is how the issues between the two individuals started. They were family, worked together, and it is deeply unfortunate that circumstances have brought them to this tragic point. People are currently living in good conditions, and there is no reason to fear due to tension between the two families.”
