A 37-year-old man was shot dead while trying to separate a father who was fighting with his son at Oronyo, Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State.
The Oronyo Community Youth leader, Abdala Thomas, told Radio Tamazuj that the incident happened at 9am on Thursday following a dispute over livestock for a bride price.
He identified the killer as a 90-year-old man, who on disagreeing with his son, picked up his gun with which he ended up shooting the person seeking to reconcile them.
Thomas said the son had attempted to take more cows than his father had agreed to for his dowry, angering the old man.
Torit County Commissioner Christopher Andrew confirmed the incident but decried the poor road network that had impended the dispatch of the police for investigations.
Andrew said the deceased was an official of the Bur Payam SPLM Liberation Council.
A Clinical Officer at the Oronyo Primary Health Center Anthony John Asaa said the deceased was shot on the right upper abdomen and died as he was being rushed to the facility.
“He was shot at the right upper abdomen, between the ribs and critically injured as the bullet pierced through a vital organ,” Assa said.
The Bur Payam MP representing SPLM-IG, Angelina Quintino Okun, condemned the incident and sent her condolences to the bereaved family.
She urged government to investigate the matter with a view to reconciling the two families.
“Elders are supposed to be patient with blessings and should advise the youth. Since a crime has been committed, the law should take its course,” she said.
