A hippopotamus attacked a fisherman on Sunday when he was checking for fish on his hooks and nets at a fishing site in Laach River, Warrap State.
The fisherman Mangong Manyuat says the hippopotamus attacked him while he was on his boat: “I was raising my net and then it attacked me. After that I tried to jump off the boat, then it caught my leg under water until I speared it.”
Commenting on the incident, the Director of Wildlife in Twic County Manut Aguek has urged the local fishermen to stay away from rivers considered home to hippopotamuses.
“Animals should be killed when you are protecting your property because it is destroying your property but you should not go near them intentionally like that — it seems like you want to hurt them, which is unacceptable,” he said.
Mangong was taken to a hospital in Turalei for treatment.
