A 32-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to death in his house in Jonglei State’s Duk County on Sunday, local officials said.
John Chatim Ruei, the Duk County commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the deceased, Deng Mun Puot, was found hanging in his house where he also left a suicide note in Duk Padiet town on Sunday morning.
“No one knows why he took his own life while he was not even under the influence of alcohol,” he said. “However, he left a suicide note that gave no reason for taking his life but he wrote that his benefits at his former workplace be followed up and that someone who demands SSP 10, 000 from him be paid.”
Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Deng Turuk Akoi, the county police inspector, said the incident is being investigated.
“The man killed himself at 11 am and the reason for the suicide is being investigated,” he said. “The two likely reasons according to the suicide note are that he (the deceased) is being demanded SSP 10, 000 and the second reason is that of his unpaid benefits.”
For his part, Simon Manyok Deng, the state human rights adviser, said he was shocked by the rising suicide cases in Jonglei State.
“Those who always commit suicide find themselves in a situation they think they cannot cope with,” he said. Secondly, they do not see anyone out there who can support them,” he said. “Finally, they do not see any meaning in their life and the world. So, for this to be tackled, I advise families to support their kin, and employers should respect and motivate their workers. We must all accept that hardships are part of human existence and that we can overcome them.”
