The police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State say a man who was held at the military police detention cells in Warawar payam in Aweil East County on Monday night died under unclear circumstances.

The man, who the police identified as 30-year-old bus conductor Aguer Ben Achiech, had just arrived in the border town last evening.

“What happened last night was that a man called Ben Aguer Aguer Achiech around 30-year-old who was also a bus conductor came from Sudan at late hours and booked a lodge in Warawar where he stored his luggage and went out to spend a time in a club. After he came back from the club, he found the lodge was closed so he tried to jump over the compound, and from there he was arrested by military police in Warawar. This morning he was found dead and circumstances over the death are unclear up to now,” Northern Bahr el Ghazal State police spokesman, Captain Guot Guot Akol told Radio Tamazuj this afternoon.

Guot said the police have launched investigations into the mysterious death and said no arrests have been made.

"The body is undergoing postmortem to verify the root cause. The police have opened a case under section 53 of the South Sudan Criminal Code to find more evidence on the death and after the verifications conclude and doctors announce that he was killed, then the police will carry on with other procedures,’’ he added.

Aweil East County Commissioner, Kiir Yor Lual, said a fact-finding committee has been formed to furnish the county security committee with a report in two days.

"I formed the committee to go to the site to ascertain the facts around the death," Yor said.

However, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity told Radio Tamazuj that the man might have been killed.

“According to three people who were jailed at the military cells, they said the soldiers came with the man and threw him inside and they went away. From there they would visit him every five minutes and light a torch at him until around 10 pm when they announced that the man had committed suicide," the source said.
