David Loroko, a 35-year-old man, on Saturday blew himself up with a hand grenade that exploded in Ikotos County of Torit State, a local official said.

The incident occurred near Idwelle River, north of Ikotos town.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Ikotos County Commissioner, Cirilo Akoyo said they suspect the deceased was mentally ill.

“A mad guy went and disappeared in the bush for two days. He went with a hand grenade and killed himself there. It happened on December 28 and I told the Monyomiji (youth) to go and search the forest where the sound was heard and they found him,” Akoyo said.

He added, “Relatives came to police and opened a case in the name of the lost person. The youth searched for him for two days and on the third day, it was discovered that he had killed himself.”

The local official said the deceased was last seen carrying wood meant for erecting home shelter, two days before he disappeared.

He urged local residents not to move with guns to avoid a repeat of the incident. Akoyo said the security situation in the county was calm.

Separately, the commissioner has warned that the MTN network was likely to stop working in the coming days due to shortage of fuel.

He said fuel currently being used was contributed by traders and other well-wishers and appealed to the MTN Company to supply fuel to the county.

Officials from MTN could not be easily reached for comment.
