An inmate committed suicide by hanging himself inside the jail cell in Renk town where he was being held, police authorities said on Friday.
The 26-year-old-man — taken into police custody on criminal charges Thursday — used his shirt to hang himself, Manyok Jurkuch, the police commissioner in Northern Upper Nile State told Radio Tamazuj.
The top police officer said the discovery was made on Friday morning by police officers doing an inspection.
Jurkuch noted that the man was found hanging from the cell's bars with a piece of cloth around his neck. He added that the man was awaiting trial and had been alone in the cell at the time.
Jurkuch identified the young man as Thon Wol Mayen.
The police commissioner pointed out that the man was arrested on Thursday last week, after he allegedly stabbed a man called Ajak Dhieu.
Jurkuch revealed that the family said their son was suffering from mental illness, saying investigations into the incident are underway.
