The local authorities in Mvolo County, Western Equatoria State, said John Belle Mina, 47, took his own life by hanging on Monday after a disagreement with his two wives over commodities to celebrate New Year’s Day.
Lt. Clement Andrugo, the head of the police’s crime unit in Mvolo County, told Radio Tamazuj that the incident occurred after a domestic quarrel.
“The deceased argued with his wives over basic needs such as soap and soda for the celebrations. After the quarrel, he went to the bush and hanged himself,” he said. “Our investigations show no deeper family issues beyond this specific disagreement. If disagreements arise, people should report to the police or community leaders. These issues can always be handled peacefully.”
A relative of the deceased, Moses Pallo, corroborated that Belle had a dispute with his wives before taking his life.
“On the night of 29 December 2024, he had a heated argument with his wives. The following afternoon, on 30 December, he went to the bush, and later, we found him dead,” he said.
Pallo revealed that the police detained one of the deceased’s wives for questioning.
“As a family, we still do not know the full details of what led to his death or the exact source of the quarrel,” he said. “Couples should be educated about handling disagreements peacefully. Women especially should be encouraged to report mistreatment or misunderstandings to the police before situations escalate.”
This incident highlights the need for community awareness on resolving family disputes and seeking support during conflicts to prevent such tragedies.
