A man, whose name is not mentioned for security reasons, has been arrested for killing a boda-boda rider and setting the motorbike ablaze along the Torit-Juba road. The suspect is currently in police custody in Torit, awaiting trial, while authorities continue to track down two others involved in the attack.
On the 23rd, a boda-boda rider, whose name is undisclosed for investigative purposes, was attacked and killed, with his motorcycle taken in Hai-some along the Torit-Juba road.
Jacob Atari Albano, Commissioner of Torit County, told Radio Tamazuj that one suspect has been arrested for the killing and is currently in police custody. He stated, “One suspected criminal who boarded a boda to be taken to Lowoi from Torit, along the road, might have planned with some of his colleagues. They stopped the boda and killed the boda-boda rider. One suspect has been arrested and is under investigation. Two others still remain at large.”
James Monday Enoka, the Commissioner of Police in Eastern Equatoria State, confirmed the arrest and stated that forces are actively investigating the whereabouts of two missing suspects. He emphasized that attacking and killing is an unlawful act punishable by law.
“We sent forces yesterday to the crime scenes, and one suspect was arrested. Three others are yet to be found. We brought the dead body and handed it over to the relatives of the deceased. The suspect who boarded this boda is now in police custody. The incident happened, but thanks to the security forces, we were able to arrest the primary suspects. Other remaining suspects are still under investigation. We are shocked over the unlawful incident. The suspect was arrested a day ago by police forces on the ground. No bloodshed can be left unpunished; everybody who commits a crime will be taken to face court,” he explained.
Jimmy Killang, a Civil Society activist and the Executive Director of SARRA organization, condemned the acts and urged forces to investigate the two other suspects. While applauding the security forces for the arrest, he called on communities to refrain from such unlawful acts, which hinder movement.
“This is a very bad act that is not supposed to happen during this time. This is not a time when people are supposed to kill each other. We are extremely saddened, and we don’t want such acts to repeat themselves because the Boda is essential for people as a means of transport. If such acts are happening, it means it’s going to give people another difficulty because travellers will now fear to board a motorcycle. This is a bad act. I condemn that one, and that is a very bad thing he has done. We thank the government for apprehending the suspect, and they will be held accountable, including those who participated with him in the act,” Killang explained.
Police authorities reported that the security situation in Eastern Equatoria State during the Christmas festival was normal, as forces were deployed to contain criminal acts across the state.
