Authorities in Yirol West County of South Sudan’s Lakes State confirmed that a suspect identified as Manyang Malith has been arrested and is detained at the Maburzeet prison for allegedly killing a policeman.

Rin Maker Mading, Yirol West County Executive Director told Radio Tamazuj said that the two engaged in a brief altercation that led to the death of the policeman identified as Machut Makur in Abang Payam on Friday.

“The problem was something very slight. The guy was passing by the house of late Machut Makur who was a policeman. Some children who were home lit a torch at them. The suspect became angry at the children and asked them why they lit a torch at night,” he explained. “Then the late stood up and attacked and knocked Manyang Malith down. Two people rushed to separate them. The suspect Mr. Manyang Malith ran to the nearby bush and took a wooden stick which hit the guy and he immediately fell.”

Maker said the policeman was rushed to Yirol County hospital where he passed on.

The local official noted that the suspect immediately surrendered himself to the police and was transferred to Maburzeet prison as investigations are conducted.

“Our work is only to protect his life and to take him to face the law according to the crime he committed. We don’t have any other things to do. We have taken him to the police for investigation and then the police will send him to court,” he stated.
