Malual West community 'impeaches' its member of parliament

The Malual West Community in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state has disowned its member of parliament on Wednesday following an urgent meeting called by the community chiefs, women and youth authorities.

The community has been torn by new political tensions stemming from the Establishment Order that seeks to divide Northern Bahr el Ghazal into three states, Lol, Aweil East and Aweil. The order has not been resisted by state authorities but some SPLM cadres have sought to keep party structures united across the new states.

Angok Achuol Barjok, a member of the Lol State Legislative Assembly representing Malual West Constituency (Number 21), faced accusations that he had worked against their interest and refused to report himself in Raja, the capital of Lol State. He also reportedly remains an opponent of the appointed governor of Lol State, Rizig Hassan Zacharia.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, the Aweil North County Commissioner Garang Bol confirmed the decision by the community to 'impeach' the MP, saying that it is community legitimate obligation to run their affairs without intervention from any authority. However, the commissioner added that he did not receive any document that bears an order of discharge, but he said he will approve the petition when it will be tabled at his office.

“I have not received any official document from the community that bears the removal of the Member of Parliament,” said the commissioner. “ I have nothing to say because it is the community's affair, they have right to determine their matters.”
