South Sudan’s former military chief turned rebel leader, Gen. Paul Malong sent his condolences to late army chief James Ajongo's family on Friday.

The South Sudanese army chief died in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on Friday morning after a short illness.

“On behalf of my family, and the wider United Front membership, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family, friends and in-laws and I pray that God give them necessary strength to withstand this serious loss,” Malong said in a statement.

“His passing on this morning has created a vacuum and heartache to the entire nation and to me in particular,” he added.

Late Gen. James Ajonga replaced Paul Malong in May 2017. The former army chief is currently leading a rebel movement calling itself South Sudan United Front.
