South Sudan’s United Front, a rebel group led by former army chief Paul Malong, says it is now pursuing “regime change” in the country.

South Sudan’s United Front, a rebel group led by former army chief Paul Malong, says it is now pursuing “regime change” in the country.

“We are for regime change so as to give a chance to South Sudanese so as to choose their leader of choice. The regime change is our agenda for now and we will execute it without fear or favour,” partly reads a statement issued by the rebel group and seen by Radio Tamazuj on Thursday.

The group accused the country’s president Salva Kiir of blocking its attempts to join ongoing peace talks mediated by the African regional bloc IGAD.

The rebel movement also denied reports that General Paul Malong had sign a deal with the main opposition group led by former vice president Riek Machar to merge their groups.

Malong is under UN sanctions and has been accused of leading troops who committed atrocities against civilians during his time in office.
