Health authorities in Unity State said they recorded over 2,000 malaria cases in Bentiu, Panyjinjar, Mayom, Leer, Guit, Rubkona, Koch and Mayiendit counties.
The state’s health ministry director general, Dr. Duol Biem, told Radio Tamazuj that last year the state recorded 1,300 malaria cases and that this year has already seen a 30 percent increment in cases.
“We identified the 2,000 malaria cases between July and August,” he stated. “The malaria outbreak comes after the Ministry of Health and its partner failed to distribute mosquito nets to the communities.”
For his part, Nyakoang Tut, a patient at Bentiu IDP camp, said she was suffering from headache, fever, dizziness, and joint pains which later turned out to be malaria.
“Those are the beginning signs of malaria sign and I experienced all those signs and symptoms of the disease,” she lamented. “The problem is that there is no sufficient medical assistance.”
Meanwhile, Peter Gatdet, a resident of Bentiu Town, blamed the malaria outbreak on the failure of the state health ministry to distribute mosquito nets.
“We are appealing to the state ministry of health and its partners to distribute mosquito nets to prevent malaria,” he stated.
